Air Conditioner Recycling

The Council on the Environment of New York City is organizing an air conditioner recycling day at the 92nd Street Greenmarket on Sunday, July 15 from 9am-to 3pm at 92nd Street and First Avenue. The goal of this event is to provide people with an opportunity to recycle their old energy inefficient air conditioners in an environmentally responsible manner and allow them to receive a $35 or $100 credit toward the purchase of an energy efficient Energy Star air conditioner. Please visit www.cenyc.org for details.

Be Cool & Energy Efficient

The Council on the Environment of New York is proud to be a community partner for NYSERDA's "Be Cool" program. This summer, residential and multifamily customers of Con Edison electric service in New York City's five boroughs and Westchester County who turn in an old, working room air conditioner and purchase a new ENERGY STAR® qualified model will earn a cash bounty. Those turning in a window air conditioner can earn $35 and those turning in a through-the-wall air conditioning unit earn $100, when they purchase a new ENERGY STAR model. For information on where you can receive a reward for trading in your inefficient air conditioner for an Energy Star model: A/C Turn-in events:

    This is a great program!

By bringing your air conditioner to a recycling day, you can be sure that the Freon that circulates through older air conditioners is being removed correctly, before the metal is recycled.

The ozone layer which lies 10-25 miles above the Earth's surface is the region of the stratosphere that contains the most of the earth’s atmospheric ozone. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “The Earth's ozone layer protects all life from the sun's harmful radiation, but human activities have damaged this shield. Less protection from ultraviolet light will, over time, lead to higher skin cancer and cataract rates and crop damage.”

The big problem begins when Freon, a chlorofluorocarbon (CCl3F or CCl2F2 ). is released from air conditioners into the air. The sun’s ultraviolet radiation breaks down Freon releasing atomic chlorine. One chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules, wiping out ozone faster than it is naturally created.

First of all, you get a $35 or $100 credit when you turn in your old air conditioner and purchase an Energy Star model. Second, Energy Star air conditioners use less electricity than older less efficient models. And that will save you much more than $100 over the life of your air conditioner. In addition to reducing your electric bill, you will be reducing the total amount of power that is drawn from the electric grid, thus reducing the likelihood of blackouts and reducing the need for expensive infrastructure improvements.

Finally, by participating in this air conditioner recycling day, you will sleep better knowing that your air conditioner was properly recycled.

The Be Cool Air Conditioner Recycling Program is brought to you by Con Edison, New York Power Authority, GreenNYC, Council on the Environment of New York City, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and GreenMarket.
