Most Fetching Fare

By Peter Sherwood

Fetch may resemble Cheers with its warm pub-like charm, but here, not only does everybody know your name—they probably know your dog’s name too, for this bar and grill on the Upper East Side caters to dog lovers of all kinds. The fur-friendly establishment encourages its patrons to sit, stay and bring in framed prints of their pets (dogs only) to join the hundreds of photos of dogs that are already hung on the walls from neighborhood patrons. Upon their return, guests may even be seated at their own dog’s table.

Open for lunch and dinner, Fetch serves American classics such as Mom’s Meatloaf, Harry’s Hot Open Faced Turkey Sandwich and Individually Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Ritz crackers. Owner and chef Adam Powers is originally from Philadelphia and his Original Philly Cheese Steak (with Cheez Whiz, of course!) is undoubtedly the real thing. Apart from diner fare, Powers also includes dishes such as Cracked Black Pepper Crusted Yellowfin Tuna, Fetch Chicken Club Salad and slow-cooked Butternut Squash Soup.

Every dog has its day and what day is complete without a whopping dessert? Homemade Cheese Cake and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich will surely make you want to take yourself out for a walk afterward. Cocktails that could cause you to howl include Rocky’s Raspberry Lemonade, made with Stoli Razberi and Daisy May’s Hot Mulled Apple Cider. Storm’s Oatmeal Cookie Martini is reportedly a local legend.

Now, if you think Powers is pure gimmickry, you’re barking up the wrong tree. He knows his stuff, having attended New York Restaurant School and worked with great restaurateur Waldy Maloof at The Rainbow Room. He also spent time cooking for events at Studio 54, Xenon, The Roxy and after-parties for Broadway show openings before bringing his culinary talents to Fetch. Not only is he is committed to dishing out high-quality food with great service, he is also succeeding in helping decrease New York City’s stray dog population. Through work with city shelters and rescue organizations such as ASPCA, Humane Society and Animal Haven (who bring adoptable strays to the restaurant during the first Sunday of every month) both Powers and General Manager Britt Johnson are finding homes for lost Lhasa’s and Labs and other poor pooches. Also, customers can check out photos and bios of pets ready for adoption on the postings in the back. Johnson will even help you fill out an application to start the process.

The mission statement at Fetch says it all: “…the perfect place to find your new best friend while being treated like one of ours.”

Fetch features a daily Happy Hour from 4:30-6:30pm when beer, wine and well drinks are half price. Tuesday nights are raring with jazz and Ken Hattfield, who entertains from 8:30 to midnight. Dinner is served 5-11pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 5-12pm Friday and Saturday. Make it a dog day afternoon: Lunch is served 11am-3pm Monday through Friday, and brunch begins at 10am and ends at 3:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
