Sex Therapy

Sex Therapy? What is that, I wondered when I heard it mentioned in passing at a party. I envisioned it to be something dark and something scary, until I decided to seek one out and interview them. Alleviating my fears, a warm and soft voice greeted me on the phone. Cathy Beaton, has been a Sex Therapist for over twenty years but comes across with a motherly-compassion mixed with a Freudian intelligence. The embarrassment of my questions waned quickly as I realized Sex Therapy is very similar to regular therapy.

Cathy Beaton, (M.S., NCPsyA: AASECT) is a Certified Sex Therapist and Sex Therapy Supervisor. She is associated with Psychoanalyst-The Human Sexuality Program of Weill Cornell Medical Center; The Westchester Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. Trained by the late Sex and Marital Therapy pioneer, Helen Singer Kaplan, M.D., she worked in her private practice for 12 years before establishing her own offices on East 89th Street and Greenwich, CT.

Beaton’s expertise is based upon more than 20 years of clinical experience. Melding her sensitivity and respect for the individual along with a keen understanding of psychodynamic issues, she works on a behavioral and cognitive level. Psychotherapy is for singles in their 20's-40's, and beyond, who are feeling dissatisfied with their partners choices or who are encountering difficulty in finding and sustaining meaningful relationships. Beaton helps them gain insight and awareness into what role and reason they have in maintaining old patterns that get in their way and works with them to identify and change specific thoughts and fears that may keep them from moving forward.

Psychotherapy is also for couples who may be dealing with the emotional impact of problems related to communication, infertility and menopause. If sexual dysfunction is an issue, Beatons works with men and women who are confronting loss of desire, anorgasmia, PE, erectile problems and generally, anxiety and avoidance in dating as well as keeping sex pleasurable with changing needs and expectations as we age.

Sex is an important part of life. And Beaton is a wonderful and experienced guide in helping to make it as enjoyable as it should be.
