Spray Tanning: The Only True Safe Tanning

by Dr. William Greenberg of Skin Thera P

A healthy glow is what people call it, but what it is really is future problems such as cancer, wrinkles, and age spots. These so-called safe tanning beds are doing more harm to a person’s skin then the sun. UVA light received in a tanning bed may be two to three times more than the UVA light received from the sun on earth. The UVA rays keep people from burning, but the rays penetrate deeper into the skin doing more long-term damage. The only way to get that healthy glow without the risk of permanent damage is with spray tanning or self-tanner.

Spray tans and self-tanners contain a chemical that gradually dyes the skin letting the person get a safe tan. Everyone is different and these tanning products allow for all skin types to get as light or dark a tan as they want. Spray tanning can be full-body or just face and upper body treatment. The spray tans take about 15 minutes and the effects last about a week. These affects can be extended to about ten days when using the extender cream. This cream is a deep moisturizer with a hint of color that if applied twice daily will extend the life of the tan. It gives the look of spending time out in the sun without the consequences later.

There are a few other things that can be done to extend the life of the tan. One is do not over exfoliate after a spray tan because it removes the dead skin cells and that is what is tan. Two is don’t shower for at least six hours after tanning because it takes between two and four hours for the tan to set. Third and most important is that before tanning exfoliate the skin to get an even and longer lasting tan.

Even with the spray tanning a person still needs to be vigilant about sunscreen. Having what is considered a base tan does not mean that people no longer need sunscreen. This is a common misconception. Everyone needs to wear a full spectrum SPF of 20 or higher at all times even in the winter. What is meant by full spectrum is protection from both UVA &UVB rays. SPF rating only applies to protection against UVB rays. UVA rays are the ones that do the greatest amount of long term damage and to prevent that damage everyone needs to make sure that their sunscreen contains one of the following ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium oxide, avobenzone, or mexoryl.

In addition to using a sunscreen daily all year round everyone who is at high risk for skin cancer needs to visit the dermatologist for a yearly skin exam. This exam is to check for new or changing moles or growths. If everyone follows these simple rules they will be well on their way to aging as gracefully and healthfully as possible.

Bronze is beautiful and now everyone can be bronze without the risks that occur later in life. Spray tanning allows people to be tan year round without risk. These tans are truly 100% safe and how many things in life are truly without risk.
